Stainless steel barrels could be the next big thing
The metal barrel of the future is already here, thanks to a pair of stainless steel benchtop knives from Swiss company Stainless Steel, which are now being sold by retailers.
The stainless steel knives come in a range of sizes, with a knife that measures 14.7 by 7.6 inches (41.9 by 25.9 centimeters) and one that measures 17.8 by 9.6 (52.4 by 39.6 centimeters) making them the largest and heaviest stainless steel blades on the market.
The knives come with an extra blade, which makes them ideal for cutting meat, vegetables and nuts and making sandwiches, the company said in a press release.
A knife that fits a single person would weigh about 12 pounds (6.6 kilograms) while one with two or more people would weigh roughly 19 pounds (8.4 kilograms) the company says.
The knife is made from steel that has been alloyed with carbon and a unique alloy of carbon nanotubes that has a unique magnetic effect that allows the carbon to act like a magnet, making the blade more resistant to the elements and to heat, and also stronger.
The blades are lightweight and extremely strong, making them ideal to carry in the pocket or to hold in a pocket for food and drink, the statement said.
They can also be used for slicing meat, with the blades weighing in at 0.16 ounces (0.05 grams) for the 14.71 by 7-inch (41-inch) blade and 0.27 ounces (1.04 grams) per inch (16.2 by 10.3 centimeters) for a 17.4-by-9.6-inch blade, according to the company.
The Stainless Steel benchtop knife also features a black anodized finish that allows for a more durable, scratch-resistant finish.
The company says the stainless steel is an environmentally friendly alternative to stainless steel used in high-end consumer goods and industrial products.
“The blades have a very high corrosion resistance and are extremely strong for their weight, making these a perfect option for a daily carry,” the company told ABC News.
The products were initially launched at a Paris, France, event in September but the company has since launched a Kickstarter campaign for them, according the company’s website.
Stainless Steel is headquartered in Switzerland, but it has a manufacturing facility in Japan.
