Stainless steel depot opens in Westport

A stainless steel facility in West Port will open its doors to residents with a $15.7 million grant from the Department of Energy to begin work in 2018.

The Westport facility will have about 1,500 workers and is expected make about $300,000 per year in annual payroll, Ruchon said, adding that the grant will help to pay for the $15 million project.

Westport is located in a small community with fewer than 500 residents.

Ruchot said the project is a significant economic boost to the town and the surrounding area.

“The stainless steel we are going to use in this facility is going to come from the steel industry,” he said.

“So that means a lot of jobs that will come to the area and it will be good for the economy and good for our town.”

It’s going, I think, to be a real positive for the community and the economy of West Point and the rest of the West Coast.
